A Career in Foot & Ankle Surgery

Quick Overview

Dr Derek Park is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Park Orthopaedics in Singapore, where foot and ankle conditions make up the majority of his clinical practice. Roughly 70% of his caseload is dedicated specifically to the foot and ankle, and around 80% of his patients present with sports-related injuries, reflecting a practice built around active adults in their 30s to 50s who want to return to running, rugby, football, dance and other high-demand activity.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2001, and went on to complete his postgraduate surgical training in the United Kingdom, becoming a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) in 2005. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma & Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr & Orth) in 2010.

Dr Park undertook his specialist orthopaedic training at some of the UK’s leading centres, including the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, University College London, the Royal London Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and the Royal Free Hospital. He completed a dedicated Foot & Ankle Surgery Fellowship under the mentorship of Mr Dishan Singh at Stanmore and, Mr Anthony Sakellariou and Mr Matthew Solan in Surrey. His dedication and expertise were further recognised with the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Travelling Fellowship, which took him to centres in India, France and Germany to study advanced approaches to complex deformity correction and trauma reconstruction.

Before relocating to Singapore, Dr Park practised as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. In Singapore, he served as a Senior Consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and a Visiting Consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and continues to hold a visiting consultant role at KTPH today. He is registered as a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery with both the General Medical Council (UK) and the Singapore Medical Council.

Beyond ankle sprains, fractures and sports injuries, Dr Park has a particular subspecialty interest in diabetic foot reconstruction, which is one of the more technically demanding areas of foot and ankle surgery. He was Clinical Lead of the Multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot Service at KTPH and a member of the National Healthcare Group’s (NHG) Clinical Workgroup on Diabetic Feet, contributing to hospital-wide protocols for managing complex diabetic foot disease, including limb-threatening infections and reconstructions.
